The Jimmy Connors of Marketing Emails

Hi Reader,

I'm so happy you're here to hear more about storytelling for entrepreneurs.

I'm checking the tires and rolling the maps, ready for us to set off on this journey together, but while I do that, I have a little story for you:

Once Upon A Time

It was 1977 and the long summer evenings of my British childhood were punctuated by the ‘thock, thock’ of white tennis balls hitting wood-framed racquets on every quiet street.

For two weeks every June my whole world smelled of cut grass wafting up from under tennis balls and tennis shoes as Wimbledon took over two out of the three UK television channels, filling our heads with dreams of glory.

The adults crowded around the telly to cheer on Virginia Wade as she battled to claim the title on her home soil.

We restless children rushed outside to practice our lobs and volleys, determined to become contenders...

...until the tournament was over and the next distraction came along.

Perhaps something like this has happened to you…as you listened to a marketing guru spin a tale, and then insist that you, too, must have a 'signature story' to use in your marketing.

Inspired, you start to gather significant memories, learn about character arcs and study the hero’s journeys—because you could see that story wins.

But just as my backhand was amateur at best, your storytelling skills may be underdeveloped.

And you're busy.

Who has time to learn how to craft a soaring origin story, or a moving customer-journey tale, and figure out what “show, don’t tell” means? How do you know what 'signature story' will resonate with your audience?

And, after all, your informational emails and ‘how to’ blog posts, are doing OK, right?

But here’s what you need to know:

Storytelling doesn’t have to be complex.

You can tell a powerful story in five sentences.

You don’t need to be the Bjorn Borg or Jimmy Connors of marketing to entertain, inform, and actually have fun writing emails.

Stick with me, and I’ll show you the strategies and tactics you need to write great story-based emails, that your audience always wants to open and read. And you never need to worry that you’ll overshare, or ramble, or embarrass yourself.
